Newspaper is a yearlong extracurricular with tryout second week of new school year.
Wilbur Wright’s newspaper is called The Wright Flyer. The paper is issued quarterly: one before fall break, winter break, spring break and the end of the year. The Wright Flyer features topics decided on by the staff members covering school news, students, teachers, extracurricular activities, town news and world news.
Students wanting to be on staff must submit a sample article as their “tryout”. In early August, there will be a callout meeting where students are given s a list of possible article topics and guidelines for what to include in the writing sample. Students are given about a week to submit. As the articles are read, preference is given to those who use strong mechanics, strong vocabulary, and an ability to write with enthusiasm! Tone is important with a student audience. Students with a desire to be on staff must also have a signed permission slip from a parent/guardian.
Important dates would be announced throughout the year. Tryout date in August, followed by meeting dates including deadline dates for articles.
Staff meetings are held after school from 3:00-3:30 in room D12. There is not a set schedule. Staff members are expected to attend all meetings; however, if there are conflicts, they must be communicated in advance.
